In 1954, a small group of committed social workers and physicians concerned about families in distress saw a gap in services and started a pilot project. The professional staff worked on a voluntary basis. In 1973, The National Council of Jewish Women of Canada joined forces with these dedicated professionals in sponsoring the Israel Family Counselling Association (IFCA) and the first permanent office was established in Tel Aviv. NCJW Canada provides IFCA with its only financial support outside Israel. National Council of Jewish Women of Canada is concerned with the well being of Jewish family life, the State of Israel and the desperate need for counselling services in Israel. NCJWC is the major financial support of IFCA. Through this critical financial support IFCA is able to help people adjust and cope with the extreme tensions of their daily lives, heightened by the pressures of living in a country whose borders are fraught with danger and whose family life is constantly threatened by war. IFCA is open to the entire population of Israel. Referrals come from private physicians, public health nurses, social workers, rabbis, lawyers, and Kibbutzim. The majority seeking assistance do so on their own initiative due to the highly regarded reputaion of the agency. The Israel Family Counselling Association Provides:
