FACT SHEET IN BRIEF

Some Vital Projects Initiated By:
National Council of Jewish Women of Canada

  • Golden Age Drop-In Centers began in Winnipeg and Montreal Sections in 1949 and are the forerunners of all senior drop-in centers in Canada.

  • Bernard Betel Centre for Creative Living in Toronto - A Senior Citizen drop-in centre started at Council House.

  • Bathurst/Prince Charles - Integrated Housing Project in Toronto for the disabled and seniors.

  • Kosher Meals On Wheels established in 1965 and is available in every Section.

  • Kosher Shelter for Battered Women and Children - Auberge Shalom in Montreal.

  • Heart to Heart originated by London Section and received a "Life Style Awards" from the Federal Government.

  • Testing for Tay Sachs Diseases in Winnipeg, Toronto and Vancouver.

  • Health Education and Learning Project (HELP) to assist women to become knowledgable consumers of health care which has become international in scope.

  • Breast Self-Examination - BSE taught on a one to one in private, the proper way for examination.

  • Annual Passover Food Drive in Toronto and Edmonton.

  • Chesed House - Kosher residence for people with AIDS in Montreal.

  • Breakfast Clubs - In Toronto, whereby they provide a hot and nutritious breakfast and boxed lunches for children living in need.

  • Operation Dress-Up - In Vancouver, involves collecting good used children's clothing and distributing it to Inner City Schools for inadequately and unsuitably dressed children.

  • Mental Health Play Reading groups.

  • Pre-School Program - Toronto - previous to Junior Kindergarten in Ottawa.

  • Centre Yeladim - an after school program for disadvantaged youths in Montreal.

  • Audiometer Testing for children in Winnipeg and Vancouver.

  • Block Parent Plan - originated in 1972 in London Section and today is in most Canadian communities.

  • Librairies were opened in Montreal, Vancouver and Edmonton. The Tony Robinson Boy & Girls Library in Montreal continues today.

  • HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) is a pilot project with Simon Fraser University and Brittania Center in Vancouver.

  • Scholarships including the Irene Samuel Scholarship Fund for Jewish education.

  • The "Get" and "Agunah" Rights - across Canada and internationally, NCJWC is actively involved in working to make changes.

  • School for Citizenship Participation.

  • Kids On The Block - a puppet program by Toronto Section to teach children to accept and appreciate the many differences among us all.

Some Briefs Written and Presented Were:
  • 1965 - "Guidance and Education" paved the way for guidance and counselling in every school in Manitoba.

  • 1972 - "Environment and Anti-Pollution" presented to United Nations Conference on Human Environment.

  • 1979 - "Citizen Impact" - "Suicide Among Winnipeg Youth" a review of programs and services presented to the Manitoba Government.

  • 1981 - "Women and Pensions" presented to the Minister of Health and Welfare.

  • 1990 - "Women and New Reproductive Technologies" presented to task force.

  • 1998 - Letter written to Federal Government on the proposed devastating Seniors Benefit - it has been tabled.
Other:
  • "Ship-A-Box" - Education toys for children in Israel.

  • "CHILD" - NCJWC's help to Israel's learning development.

  • "Israel Family Counselling Association" in Tel Aviv.

  • Money and supplies sent to Croatia and Kosovo.

  • Member of International Council of Jewish Women representing 47 affiliates with one and one-half million Jewish women.

  • Through International Council of Jewish Women, we are represented on World Jewish Congress, UNESCO, UNICEF and WHO.
